Abstract
Perioperative clinicians encounter a wide range of liver disease including acute and chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and patients with a liver transplant. It can be challenging to assess perioperative risk, decide when to delay surgery, and to optimize patients prior to surgery. Hepatologists from the American College of Gastroenterology recently provided additional guidance on risk assessment and management of patients with cirrhosis, including issues like thrombocytopenia and abnormal coagulation studies, and whether to consider pre-op TIPs procedures.
