SPAQI fosters and prompts professional development within the perioperative medicine space, and this includes clinical teaching and leadership training as well as amplification of content expertise and excellence in this area of medicine.  Awards can be a vitally important part of the promotion and tenure process, as well as other professional advancement opportunities. Perioperative specialists, by virtue of working in an interdisciplinary space, may have less visibility from individual medical specialty societies and therefore be disadvantaged in the awards process.

The SPAQI annual society awards were launched in 2022 (with first awards given at the 2023 Perioperative Medicine Summit) to fulfill the society’s mission to recognize, highlight, and celebrate excellence in the perioperative space.

• Physician within 10 years of residency completion (for the year of award receipt)

• Physician > 10 years from residency completion (for the year of award receipt) and still actively in practice
• Should be viewed as a middle career award
  
  
• Lifetime Achievement Award
• Physicians still in practice or retired
• Nomination letters should also speak to the nominee’s legacy and sustained impact within the national and international perioperative medicine community in addition to SPAQI involvement
  
  
• Advanced Practice Provider of the Year
  
  
• Community Service and Advocacy Award - NEW FOR 2026!
  • This award honors an individual within the perioperative medicine community who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to one or more of the following areas: community service, advocacy, inclusivity, and health policy. It recognizes those who champion initiatives that address healthcare disparities, improve access to perioperative care for underserved populations, and promote equitable patient outcomes. Recipients exemplify leadership through public health advocacy, community engagement, education, or other efforts that foster a more inclusive and just healthcare system.

  Nomination process/criteria:

  1. Letter(s) of support
  1. 1 minimum, 3 max accepted
  2. Group letters accepted and count as one letter
  3. Nomination letters must confirm category for the nomination
  4. Nomination letters must speak to strengths in at least one of the following domains within perioperative medicine: patient care, teaching, service (includes leadership, teamwork, mentorship, advocacy, DEI efforts), innovation, and/or research
  5. Nomination letters must also speak to direct contributions/involvement in their home communities/institution and to the SPAQI/broader perioperative community as well as ideally speak to national/international impact within the field of perioperative medicine
  2. Nominees’ CV
  3. Membership in SPAQI by the nominee is required
  4. No limitations to number of nominations per nominator
  5. SPAQI Board members are eligible to receive awards; SPAQI Executive Committee members are not eligible to receive awards
